From One Pharmacy to a $125 Million Healthcare Powerhouse: The Adesh Vora Story
When Adesh A. Vora, Pharm.D., opened his first specialty pharmacy in 2013, few could have predicted it would grow into one of Canada’s largest specialty healthcare networks — let alone become the centerpiece of a landmark acquisition just over a decade later. In September 2024, that vision culminated in a defining moment: Better Choice Company Inc. (NYSE American: BTTR) announced an agreement to acquire SRx Health Solutions Inc., the company Vora founded, in an all-stock deal valued at approximately $125 million.
Building SRx Health from the Ground Up
Under Vora’s leadership, SRx Health grew from a single pharmacy location into a national healthcare service provider. By the time of the acquisition, the company operated one of the largest specialty pharmacy networks in the country, spanning dozens of pharmacy locations, specialty health and infusion clinics, clinical trial sites, and wholesale distribution facilities. In its most recent fiscal year, SRx generated substantial revenue and healthy adjusted earnings, underscoring the strength of the business Vora had built.
SRx’s model centers on specialty pharmacy services managing patients through complex, chronic, and rare disease journeys rather than simply filling prescriptions. That end-to-end approach, spanning patient support programs, retail pharmacy, clinical trials, and diagnostics, positioned the company as a differentiated player in the Canadian healthcare landscape.
The Better Choice Deal
The acquisition structure reflects just how significant SRx’s role will be in the combined entity. Under the terms of the agreement, SRx Health securityholders will own roughly 85% of the combined company, with existing Better Choice shareholders holding the remaining 15%. As part of the transaction, Better Choice also planned to spin out a portion of its pet-food subsidiary, Halo, Purely for Pets, to its existing shareholders ahead of the deal closing.
Perhaps most notably, leadership of the combined company reflects the scale of what Vora built: he was named Chief Executive Officer of the merged organization, while also chairing its five-member board. Michael Young, then Chairman of Better Choice, praised the SRx team’s steady, organic growth and pointed to meaningful operational synergies expected once the companies combined.
Who Is Adesh Vora?
Vora brings more than two decades of pharmacy and healthcare experience to the role. He holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Illinois and has completed executive programs at both Harvard Business School and the MIT Sloan School of Management. Beyond SRx, he serves on the board of the Neighbourhood Pharmacy Association of Canada and as President of the Seva International Charitable Foundation reflecting a career that has blended business growth with industry advocacy and philanthropy.
Why This Matters
The deal marks a broader shift for Better Choice, moving the company beyond its pet health and wellness roots into a diversified healthcare and wellness platform. For the healthcare industry, it’s a reminder of how much room remains for founder-led specialty pharmacy businesses to scale — and how a leader who started with one location can end up steering an entire public company.
As the combined organization moves forward, all eyes will be on how Adesh Vora translates SRx’s Canadian growth story into the next chapter of a larger, publicly traded healthcare platform.
